Where it came from
The Ruinous Wrecking Crew card, designated number 422, was released as part of the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set produced by Impel. This inaugural set was a landmark moment for the hobby, marking the first time Marvel licensed an exhaustive, high-quality set of cards featuring character bios and stats on the reverse, effectively elevating comic book collecting to a mainstream trading card phenomenon.
The card features artwork depicting the quartet of super-villains—Wrecker, Piledriver, Thunderball, and Bulldozer—who were originally created by Len Wein and Sal Buscema in the mid-1970s. The visual style captures the gritty, power-focused aesthetic of the group, which was designed to serve as a formidable physical threat to Thor and other heavy-hitting heroes. At the time of the card's release, the characters were enjoying a period of renewed narrative relevance in Marvel's ongoing continuity, ensuring their inclusion in this definitive collection of the era's most iconic figures.
