What it does
At the beginning of your upkeep, choose an opponent at random. Exile the top card of that player's library. Until end of turn, you may play that card and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast it. When you cast a spell this way, its owner loses life equal to its mana value.

Where it came from
The Ruinous Powers deck was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander product line for Magic: The Gathering. This set emerged from a partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to integrate the grimdark science-fiction aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the fantasy-based mechanics of Commander. The deck specifically focuses on the Chaos factions, featuring legendary creatures that represent the pantheon of the Warp and their malevolent influence.
The art direction for this deck involved collaborations between various illustrators tasked with translating iconic Warhammer concepts into the Magic card frame. The design prioritizes the visual language of heresy and entropy, utilizing deep purples, golds, and grotesque imagery to reflect the aesthetic of Chaos. Upon its release, the deck was well-received by the hobby community for its thematic depth and its ability to capture the complex, cascading playstyles associated with Chaos factions in the tabletop wargaming source material.
