The Savant

The Savant was released in 2014 as part of the Hero's Path promotion for the Magic: The Gathering set Born of the Gods. This series of cards functioned as a semi-persistent narrative experience for players, designed to represent the journey of an evolving hero within the Theros block. By completing specific quests in-store, players would earn these cards to augment their deck, emphasizing the block's focus on mythology and personal narrative growth.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose artwork captured the intellectual and mystical essence intended for a blue-aligned hero card. The design focus was on providing players with a sense of progression, as the Hero's Path cards were meant to be added to one's deck over the course of several months. The card was received by the player base as a novel engagement tool, serving as a nostalgic memento of organized play during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with interactive, multi-set storytelling mechanics.
