Provenance

Where it came from

The Thing, card number 878, was released as part of the Marvel Super Heroes Commander set, a trading card series that drew heavily from the expansive Marvel Universe of the era. These cards were produced to cater to the growing demographic of comic book enthusiasts and collectors who sought to catalog the diverse roster of heroes and villains beyond the primary splash pages of individual titles. The set was designed to serve as a comprehensive reference, offering brief biographies and high-quality character illustrations that captured the essence of iconic figures like Ben Grimm.

The visual direction for the set emphasized clean, classic comic book aesthetics, often pulling from established house styles to maintain consistency across the hundreds of characters represented. The Thing is depicted with his signature rocky hide and grounded, stoic demeanor, a design choice intended to highlight his role as the sturdy backbone of the Fantastic Four. Upon release, the set was received as a standard collectible for the mid-nineties market, appreciated by fans for its accessible format and the breadth of the character list, which included both A-list headliners and deeper cuts from Marvel history.
