What it does

At the beginning of your upkeep, secretly choose a number between 1 and 5 that hasn't been chosen. If you do, an opponent guesses which number you chose, then you reveal the number you chose. If they guessed wrong, they lose life equal to the number they guessed and you draw a card. If they guessed right, sacrifice this enchantment.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Toymaker's Trap was released as part of the Doctor Who Trading Card Game, which sought to translate the long-running science fiction television series into a tabletop experience. The card draws its thematic inspiration from the classic villain The Celestial Toymaker, a whimsical yet dangerous adversary who first appeared in 1966. Its design is intended to reflect the surreal, game-focused nature of the antagonist's original episodes, utilizing imagery that evokes the mid-century aesthetic associated with the character’s television debut.

The illustration work aims to capture the eerie playfulness of the Doctor's reality-bending foes, balancing the show's dark undertones with the vibrant visual identity of the card game series. Upon release, the set was received by the community as a nostalgic addition to the Doctor Who franchise, serving both as a functional game component and a collectible nod to the series' extensive history. Designers focused on integrating the show's lore directly into gameplay mechanics to appeal to fans of the long-running program.
