Thermo-Alchemist was originally introduced in the 2016 Eldritch Moon expansion as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the desperate and volatile nature of alchemy used by the local citizenry to combat the cosmic threats posed by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The design team sought to capture the theme of rapid spellcasting, translating the act of throwing volatile reagents into a repeatable damage-dealing mechanic that rewards players for playing multiple spells in a single turn.

The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, fire-focused color palette to emphasize the heat and impending explosion inherent in the subject's work. Upon its release, the card became a staple in limited formats and niche constructed decks, lauded for its efficiency as a utility creature. It was later included in the 2025 Innistrad Remastered set, collector number 174, which curated iconic elements from across the plane's history to celebrate the setting's enduring influence on the game.
