Lore

Why it matters

As a rare card from this specific collection, the Thief of Sanity offers a unique way to turn your opponent's own resources against them during a game. By allowing you to exile cards from an opponent's library and cast them later, this card fundamentally shifts the balance of the table by expanding your potential hand with stolen spells.

What it does

Flying

Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, look at the top three cards of that player's library, exile one of them face down, then put the rest into their graveyard. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and mana of any type can be spent to cast that spell.

Provenance

Where it came from

Thief of Sanity originally debuted in the Guilds of Ravnica set in 2018 as a rare card representing the Dimir guild, known for its focus on surveillance and information theft. This specific version was reprinted for the 2024 Ravnica: Clue Edition, a standalone board game-style experience that integrated Magic: The Gathering mechanics with the classic murder mystery game Clue.

The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who depicts the character as an ethereal, shadowy figure infiltrating a mind, perfectly capturing the Dimir theme of psychological sabotage. The design was praised for its distinct evasion and card advantage capabilities, making it a staple in blue-black control archetypes throughout its lifespan in various formats.
