Provenance

Where it came from

The Thieving Magpie first appeared in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a classic blue creature that rewarded aggressive play with card advantage. By the time it was reprinted in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001, the card had already solidified its reputation as a fundamental 'build-around' uncommon. Its inclusion in Seventh Edition marked the beginning of a long tenure in the core sets, where it served as a primary example of blue's color identity: trading raw power for the ability to refill a player's hand.

The artwork for this version was provided by Heather Hudson, whose illustrative style brought a whimsical, avian sharpness to the card. Hudson aimed to capture the creature's namesake behavior, depicting the magpie in a way that felt both intelligent and opportunistic. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its balanced design, becoming a staple in both Limited formats and casual kitchen-table decks throughout the early 2000s.
