Thorn Elemental

Thorn Elemental was first released in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set served as the final chapter of the complex Urza block, a narrative arc centered on the artificer Urza and his struggle against the Phyrexians. The card was designed as a powerhouse green creature, intended to showcase the massive, nature-based threats characteristic of the game's color philosophy during that era.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Donato Giancola, whose painterly style was instrumental in defining the visual language of late-90s Magic. Giancola sought to capture a sense of primal, imposing vitality, depicting the elemental as a towering figure of wood and vine. Upon its release, it became a staple of casual play due to its unique ability to deal combat damage as if it were unblocked, making it a memorable and intimidating presence on the tabletop.
