Thorn Elemental

Thorn Elemental was originally introduced in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed to be a quintessential 'timmy' card—a powerful, high-mana green creature that offered a straightforward but devastating combat ability. By the time it was reprinted as card number 273 in the Seventh Edition core set, it had already established itself as a staple of green deck archetypes, prized for its ability to assign combat damage as if it were not blocked. This reprint featured the modern border design introduced in Seventh Edition, which aimed to standardize the look of the game while enhancing the readability of the card text.

The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Greg Staples, who captured the towering, arboreal nature of the creature. Staples' work on this piece emphasizes the elemental's organic texture and imposing scale, aligning with the aesthetic shifts of the early 2000s Magic: The Gathering art direction. Upon its inclusion in Seventh Edition, the card was widely received as a reliable mid-to-late game finisher in Limited formats, maintaining its status as a classic example of green's philosophy of raw, overwhelming power.
