Where it came from
Thorn of Amethyst originated as a specialized artifact card in the Lorwyn expansion of Magic: The Gathering, designed to tax noncreature spells and slow the pace of high-velocity competitive formats. The version included in the Tales of Middle-earth Commander set reimagines the artifact through the lens of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, specifically evoking the corruption and alluring danger of the One Ring and the darker relics of Mordor.
The art for this specific printing was executed by illustrator Darek Zabrocki, who sought to capture the jagged, crystalline aesthetic of the amethyst thorn while grounding it in the grim, high-fantasy tone of Middle-earth. The card is highly regarded by collectors and players alike for its thematic alignment with the set's aesthetic overhaul, successfully bridging the mechanical utility of a classic Magic staple with the iconic visual identity of the franchise.
