Where it came from
Thorn of Amethyst was originally introduced in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion Lorwyn. Designed as a taxing effect to slow down non-creature spell strategies, it quickly became a staple in eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage. The card operates on a simple but punishing mechanic that makes spells cost one generic mana more to cast, a design choice intended to reward creature-heavy decks.
This specific version, numbered 123 in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set, was released in late 2022. It features the classic retro frame treatment, a stylistic homage to the original Magic: The Gathering card aesthetic from the mid-1990s. This series was widely received by players and collectors as a successful celebration of the game's heritage, successfully blending modern mechanical power with a nostalgic visual presentation.
