Where it came from
The Thornplate Intimidator card was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed to serve as a token representative for specific gameplay mechanics within the set, the card reflects the whimsical yet anthropomorphic 'Redwall-inspired' aesthetic of the plane. It depicts a sturdy creature outfitted in protective armor, emphasizing the set's central theme of small forest animals engaging in high-stakes tactical combat.
The artistic direction for this token follows the lush, storybook-influenced illustrative style curated by Wizards of the Coast for Bloomburrow. By focusing on distinct character silhouettes and naturalistic textures, the design intent was to ensure the card remained instantly recognizable on the tabletop while maintaining thematic cohesion with the primary creature cards. It has been received by players as a charming, necessary utility piece that reinforces the immersive world-building of the set.
