Where it came from
Thorough Investigation was released in 2021 as part of the Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set. This set marked the first time Magic: The Gathering integrated the iconic D&D franchise into its core gameplay, blending traditional fantasy mechanics with the thematic depth of tabletop role-playing. The card was designed to capture the quintessential experience of a dungeon delve, mechanically rewarding players for their ability to explore and uncover clues, mirroring the investigative spirit inherent to D&D campaigns.
The card’s illustration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, emphasizes the atmospheric intensity of the Forgotten Realms setting. Known for his work in fantasy illustration and concept art, Manzanedo focused on the high-fantasy aesthetic of the product, balancing the game's competitive utility with the rich, narrative-driven art style expected by fans of both franchises. Upon release, the card was received positively by the Commander community for its versatility and its thematic integration of the 'clue' token mechanic.
