Thought Vessel was originally introduced in the 2009 Commander preconstructed decks, quickly becoming a staple in the format due to its utility in providing both mana acceleration and an unlimited hand size. This specific version was released in 2022 as part of the Love Your LGS promotion, an initiative designed by Wizards of the Coast to support local game stores during a challenging retail landscape. The promotion incentivized players to purchase qualifying products at their local hobby shops by rewarding them with exclusive, foil-etched promotional cards.

The artwork for this particular iteration was handled by the artist Lindsey Look, who transitioned the card from its typical utilitarian aesthetic into a more atmospheric piece. Her design sought to emphasize the card's theme of psychic storage, utilizing soft light and ethereal textures that departed from the traditional metallic, industrial renderings often seen in artifacts.
