Thoughtlace

Thoughtlace was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, the inaugural trading card game developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Created during the game's initial experimental phase, the card reflects the whimsical and often idiosyncratic design philosophy of early Magic, where designers were still defining the boundaries of mechanics and flavor. Its presence in the Alpha set marks it as one of the original 295 cards that laid the foundation for the entire hobby of collectible card games.

The artwork for Thoughtlace was commissioned from Sandra Everingham, who contributed several illustrations to the game's earliest sets. Her design for this card utilizes a clean, ethereal aesthetic typical of early fantasy tabletop gaming art, aiming to visually represent the card's mechanical function of changing a permanent's color identity.
