Disenchant

Disenchant was included in the Limited Edition Alpha set released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, marking the debut of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield, the set was designed to introduce a fantasy-themed strategy game that combined elements of traditional card games with complex tactical gameplay. The inclusion of Disenchant as a common-rarity spell established the foundational white-mana utility that players used to destroy artifacts and enchantments, a core mechanic that has persisted in the game ever since.

The artwork for the original Alpha printing was illustrated by Douglas Shuler. Shuler’s piece depicts a serene, monastic figure wielding a crystalline or magical rod, reflecting the early fantasy aesthetic of the game that prioritized evocative, hand-painted illustrations over the more digital, polished styles that emerged in later sets. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized by players for its versatility and efficiency, solidifying its place as a staple of the white color identity and a frequent inclusion in deck archetypes across the game's early history.
