Where it came from
Three Wishes was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore themes of spiritual enlightenment and mystical discovery, drawing inspiration from Eastern aesthetics and mythology to differentiate it from the high-fantasy tropes of previous sets.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent fantasy artist known for his painterly style. His design for Three Wishes captures a ethereal, contemplative quality that complements the card's function, which allows a player to look at the top three cards of their library. Within the competitive community, the card is recognized for its unique, though complex, utility in blue-aligned deck archetypes during the late nineties.
