Where it came from
Released in December 1996 as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering, Karoo is one of a cycle of five lands that introduced a recurring gameplay mechanic of returning a land to the player's hand. This set was notable for being the first to be designed by a dedicated team at Wizards of the Coast, moving away from the earlier practice of standalone expansion design to ensure more cohesive mechanics and thematic integration.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Quinton Hoover, who was a pivotal figure in the early aesthetic identity of the game. Hoover utilized his signature soft, painterly style to depict the harsh but vibrant landscape of a karoo. His work on this card and others from the period helped define the visual language of the game, aiming for an ethereal and immersive quality that moved beyond standard fantasy tropes.
