Where it came from
Thriving Bluff was released in 2022 as part of the New Capenna Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks themed around the Art Deco-inspired, crime-syndicated metropolis of New Capenna. This card is part of a cycle of lands known as the 'Thriving' lands, originally introduced in Jumpstart to provide accessible mana fixing for multi-colored Commander decks. The design focuses on utility, allowing players to choose a color to produce whenever the land enters the battlefield, which helps mitigate the variance often found in casual play formats.
The card features artwork by Lucas Graciano, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His illustration for Thriving Bluff emphasizes the verticality and industrial grandeur of New Capenna’s architecture, utilizing light and shadow to reflect the set's noir-inspired art style. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community as a functional, budget-friendly inclusion for players who need reliable color consistency without the high cost associated with traditional rare dual lands.
