Throatseeker

Throatseeker was released as part of the Modern Horizons set in 2019, a product designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. Unlike standard expansion sets, Modern Horizons bypassed the traditional Standard format, allowing Wizards of the Coast to create mechanics and cards tailored to the high power level and specific synergies of the Modern card pool. It was conceived as a love letter to the game's history, featuring numerous references to older cards and mechanics that had not been printed in years.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who captured its menacing flavor through a sharp, predatory aesthetic. Within the context of the set's themes, Throatseeker functions as a creature with the 'ninjutsu' ability, rewarding players for aggressive, unblocked attacks. The design was aimed at supporting niche tribal or tempo-based strategies within the format, and upon its release, it was regarded by the community as a specialized tool for niche decks rather than a staple card, serving its role as an interesting inclusion in the set's extensive roster of draft-focused designs.
