Where it came from
The Thrull Wizard was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set focused on the grim, decaying state of the continent of Sarpadia, where various factions struggled for resources as their civilizations collapsed. The card depicts the macabre experiments of the Order of the Ebon Hand, a faction that utilized Thrulls—artificial lifeforms grown from biological refuse—to maintain their failing dominion.
The illustration was crafted by artist Quinton Hoover, known for his distinct, fluid style that often leaned into the gothic and fantastical themes prevalent in early Magic sets. The design sought to capture the unsettling nature of a necromantic practitioner commanding a creature fashioned from organic scraps. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece, reflecting the complex, often experimental mechanics that defined the Fallen Empires era of game design.
