Provenance

Where it came from

Seasinger was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was conceived as a narrative-heavy expansion centered on the internal struggles of the continent of Sarpadia, where various factions, including the Merfolk, fought for survival amidst ecological collapse. It was the fourth expansion in the game's history and sought to introduce a more complex, lore-driven identity to the expanding card pool.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, a foundational figure in early Magic: The Gathering art whose distinct, flowing style defined much of the game’s initial aesthetic. Hoover aimed to capture the ethereal and hypnotic nature of the Merfolk, focusing on the character's dual nature as both a seductive and dangerous entity. Upon release, the card became a notable example of the set's emphasis on utility creatures with specific color-aligned abilities, though the set itself was initially met with mixed reviews due to the lower power level of many cards compared to previous releases.
