Where it came from
Thundering Falls was released in early 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'land' card, it represents the investigative, high-stakes atmosphere of the Ravnica plane, reimagined through the lens of a classic whodunit mystery. The card was designed to function within the set's cycle of surveil lands, which allow players to manipulate the top of their library, emphasizing the theme of hidden information and deductive gameplay.
The visual design of Thundering Falls focuses on the dramatic, architectural scale of Ravnica, blending the city's signature brutalism with the chaotic energy of a natural cascade. Illustrators for the set aimed to capture a noir-inspired aesthetic, utilizing deep shadows and cooling color palettes to differentiate these lands from previous iterations. The card was received positively by the community for its strategic utility in competitive play and its contribution to the immersive world-building of the murder-mystery narrative.
