Where it came from
Thundering Falls, a land card featuring the surveil mechanic, was released as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set in early 2024. As a surveil land, it was designed to provide both color fixing and deck manipulation, fitting into the mystery-themed mechanical identity of the set. The promo version, marked with collector number 269s, features distinct alternative art that highlights the atmospheric, gothic urban aesthetic central to the plane of Ravnica.
The card was illustrated by the artist Alayna Danner, who has a long history of contributing lush, evocative landscapes to Magic: The Gathering. Danner’s approach for this piece emphasizes the moody, rain-slicked architecture of the Karlov Manor setting, prioritizing a sense of depth and impending tension. The promo release was received positively by players for its collectible appeal and the functional utility of the card within various constructed formats.
