Where it came from
Thundertrap Trainer was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for its departure from traditional high-fantasy tropes, focusing instead on a plane inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals in a rural, cottagecore-inspired setting. This card was designed to reflect the set's thematic emphasis on creature-type synergy and the tactical nature of the woodland inhabitants.
The illustration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, captures the characteristically cozy yet adventurous aesthetic of the plane. Manzanedo, a long-time contributor to the game, focused on conveying the trainer's role as a mentor figure within the whimsical, fable-like society of Bloomburrow. Upon its release, the card was integrated into the limited and constructed formats, where it serves as a functional tool for deck thinning and creature support, consistent with the design philosophy of mid-rarity utility cards in modern sets.
