Where it came from
Thundertrap Trainer is a card released as part of the 2024 Magic: The Gathering set titled Bloomburrow. The set was designed to explore a whimsical, anthropomorphic world inspired by high-fantasy storybook aesthetics, departing from the game's typically grittier planes. The card features an Otter Wizard, fitting the set's tribal focus on small woodland creatures, and was crafted to function within the set's specific mechanics regarding spell-casting synergies.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Billy Christian, who leaned into the cozy, vibrant art style established for the Bloomburrow plane. The design team focused on creating a character that felt both scholarly and nimble, emphasizing the Otter’s connection to water and magic. Upon release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for limited formats, noted for its ability to filter cards while maintaining a board presence.
