Where it came from
Tidal Courier was printed in 2007 as part of the Duel Decks: Merfolk vs. Goblins, a product line designed to provide players with two ready-to-play, balanced decks centered on iconic creature types. The set was created to appeal to both newer players and long-time fans by highlighting the flavor-heavy rivalry between the aquatic Merfolk and the swarming Goblins, fitting into a mid-2000s strategy by Wizards of the Coast to expand the game's approachable formats.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who employed his characteristic style to capture the creature's swift, scouting role within the Merfolk ranks. The card's mechanics, which allow a player to reveal the top cards of their library to draw cards based on the number of Merfolk revealed, were intended to reward deck-building focused on tribal synergy, a design philosophy that remains central to how Merfolk decks function in various Magic: The Gathering formats today.
