Where it came from
Tidal Courier was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse expansion, the third and final set in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to emphasize the climactic conclusion of the long-running Phyrexian invasion storyline, featuring multicolored cards that encouraged complex deck-building strategies.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Arnie Swekel, who provided a distinct, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the era's design language. Within the game's competitive environment, the card was received as a functional utility creature, valued primarily for its ability to manipulate the top of a player's library, which aligned with the blue-aligned focus on strategic card selection prevalent in the Invasion block.
