Where it came from
Tifa Lockhart debuted in the 1997 landmark role-playing game Final Fantasy VII, created by Square. Designed by Tetsuya Nomura, her visual identity was crafted to contrast with the game’s more reserved female lead, Aerith. Nomura aimed for a grounded, athletic aesthetic that reflected her role as a martial artist and a member of the anti-Shinra group AVALANCHE, utilizing a color palette of black and white to emphasize a sense of professional intensity.
The character design process involved several iterations to balance her combat capabilities with her personal backstory as a bartender in the slums of Midgar. Upon release, Tifa became an enduring icon of video game design, frequently cited by critics for her complex role in the narrative and her distinct silhouette. Collectible cards featuring this imagery, such as those within the Final Fantasy trading card series, serve as a testament to the character's lasting visual influence within the franchise.
