Tightening Coils

Tightening Coils was released in the autumn of 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and the ongoing conflict between its inhabitants and the colossal Eldrazi titans. The card was designed as a common-rarity enchantment intended for the game's Limited format, providing players with a straightforward method to neutralize opposing creatures by stripping them of their abilities and limiting their effectiveness in combat.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Tyler Jacobson, who focused on the card's theme of magical restraint. Jacobson sought to visually represent the suffocating nature of the spell, depicting shimmering, constrictive energy wrapping around a crystalline structure. As a functional common card, it received standard reception from the player base, noted primarily for its utility in draft environments where reliable removal and stalling tools are essential components of a successful deck.
