Where it came from
Timbermare was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set, the second expansion in the Time Spiral block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored an alternate-reality theme, reimagining the game's color pie and mechanics by presenting 'what-if' versions of familiar concepts. As a creature card, Timbermare embodies the elemental forces of nature typically associated with green mana, specifically designed to utilize the set's focus on temporary, high-impact battlefield effects.
The card's art was created by the illustrator Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game known for his distinct fantasy aesthetic. Briclot depicted the creature as a spectral, ethereal equine force surging through a forest, capturing the design intent of a fleeting, powerful surge of energy. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for aggressive green decks, appreciated for its ability to bypass defenses through its trample mechanic and its capability to tap down opposing creatures upon entering the battlefield.
