Where it came from
Time Wipe was introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion War of the Spark. As a core part of the set's mechanics, the card depicts the pivotal narrative moment where Teferi, the heroic time mage, maneuvers to reset the battlefield in the conflict against Nicol Bolas. The design was intended to balance high-impact defensive utility with the set's broader theme of planeswalker-centric gameplay, effectively allowing players to clear the board while retaining a valuable creature in their hand.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive, ethereal style. Voss sought to capture the fluidity of Teferi’s temporal magic, emphasizing the shimmering, destructive force of the spell while maintaining clarity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for both its strategic versatility in Commander formats and the distinct visual flair of the alternate-art promo treatment.
