Where it came from
Tithe was released in 1997 as part of the Visions expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was intended to follow the narrative arc of the Mirage block, focusing on the high-fantasy themes of the continent of Jamuraa. It was the first small set to be designed as a standalone expansion, rather than a direct extension of the previous base set, which allowed for more cohesive mechanical experimentation within its white-mana cards.
The artwork for Tithe was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists involved in the game's early years. His distinctive, atmospheric style contributed to the visual identity of the game during the mid-nineties. The card itself represents a mechanical staple of white deck construction, designed to provide land-searching utility that scales based on the opponent's board state. It remains a notable example of early color-pie design philosophy, favoring reactive, balancing mechanics.
