Where it came from
Tithebearer Giant was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The set represents a massive narrative climax for the game, depicting an epic confrontation on the plane of Ravnica between the forces of the planeswalker Nicol Bolas and a coalition of heroes. This specific card serves as a representative of the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild known for its bureaucratic and often predatory approach to religion and finance, which fits the flavor of a giant exacting a tithe during the chaos of the invasion.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Staples leaned into the aesthetic of the Orzhov, utilizing a somber, muted color palette dominated by whites, blacks, and golds to evoke the guild's ghostly and opulent nature. The illustration was designed to convey the imposing physical scale of the giant while reinforcing its role as an enforcer for the syndicate, emphasizing themes of institutional weight and mandatory tribute.
