Where it came from
Tolarian Academy was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Mark Rosewater, the card was intended to represent the prestigious wizard school from the game's lore, but its mechanics proved unexpectedly powerful. It allowed players to generate vast amounts of mana based on the number of artifacts they controlled, quickly becoming a defining element of competitive play and forcing significant changes to tournament formats.
The 2020A version is a special promotional printing issued for the Vintage Championship. This iteration features updated card frames and premium foiling techniques to celebrate the history of the format. While the illustration maintains the core visual identity established by artist Eric Peterson in the original printing, the 2020 release serves as a high-end collectible piece for players who appreciate the evolution of the game’s most iconic cards.
