Where it came from
Tolarian Contempt was released in May 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed as a narrative epilogue to the conclusion of the Phyrexian invasion storyline, focusing on the lingering consequences for various legendary figures and planes across the Multiverse. The card represents the scholarly and defensive nature of Tolarian academia as it grapples with the aftermath of the multiversal conflict.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and atmospheric style to depict the heavy, academic weight of Tolarian history. Within the community, the card is recognized for its thematic resonance with the blue color identity's focus on interaction and control, serving as a functional piece that reflects the shift in tone toward a post-war rebuilding phase in the game's evolving lore.
