Where it came from
Tomb Fortress was released in 2022 as part of the Necron Dynasties deck for the Magic: The Gathering Warhammer 40,000 Commander set. This collaborative release marked the first time the game integrated the grimdark lore of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into its mechanical ecosystem, specifically focusing on the ancient, metallic Necron race.
The card was designed to reflect the technological and architectural themes of the Necrons, emphasizing their relentless, self-repairing nature. The artwork illustrates a monolith-like structure rising from a desolate landscape, capturing the cold, mechanical aesthetic established by Games Workshop’s design team and interpreted through the lens of Wizards of the Coast’s illustrative style, which was generally well-received by players for its thematic consistency with the source material.
