Where it came from
Torment of Scarabs was released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, a set defined by its themes of apocalypse and the return of the dragon god Nicol Bolas to the plane of Amonkhet. Mechanically, the card was designed to force opponents into difficult choices, reflecting the set’s narrative focus on the relentless, crushing nature of Bolas's influence over the citizens of Naktamun.
The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the horror of the encroaching scarab plague. Within the player community, the card is recognized for its thematic resonance with the set's top-down design, effectively conveying the feeling of being slowly drained of resources by an inescapable curse.
