Where it came from
Torment of Hailfire was originally released as a rare sorcery in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, set on the plane of Amonkhet. The card was designed to capture the flavor of the villainous dragon Nicol Bolas, who subjects his followers to a brutal trial of suffering. Mechanically, it functions as a scaling 'mana sink' that forces opponents to sacrifice permanents or lose life, reflecting the overwhelming dread and destruction brought upon the city by Bolas's arrival.
This specific promo version, identified by collector number 77s, was distributed as a participation reward for the Hour of Devastation Prerelease events. The artwork, illustrated by Daarken, depicts a landscape consumed by dark, crystalline energy, aligning with the apocalyptic aesthetic of the set. Upon its release, the card gained significant notoriety in both casual and competitive formats for its ability to end games abruptly, becoming a quintessential example of high-impact late-game sorceries.
