Provenance

Where it came from

Trade Caravan was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the flavor and lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, focusing on a gothic, isolated world struggling against ancient threats. As a white-aligned creature card, Trade Caravan was conceived to reflect the nomadic, merchant-focused culture of the plane's inhabitants, emphasizing the set's thematic preoccupation with trade and survival within a walled-off society.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Anson Maddocks, whose distinctively eerie and textured style defined much of the early visual identity of the game. Maddocks sought to capture the weary, wandering nature of the caravan across the desolate landscape of Ulgrotha. While the Homelands set faced criticism at the time of its release for its lower power level relative to previous expansions, it remains a notable example of the game's early efforts to integrate complex narrative storytelling directly into mechanical gameplay design.
