Where it came from
Trade Caravan was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was rapidly expanding the game's lore, the set was designed to explore the flavor and history of the plane of Ulgrotha. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on the self-contained, gothic-horror atmosphere of that specific world, serving as a creature card that captures the flavor of nomadic commerce within that isolated setting.
The artwork was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists who defined the game's early visual identity. Maddocks utilized a distinct, moody style that emphasizes the gritty, grounded nature of the caravan's journey. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility creature, fitting into the broader strategic landscape of the era, though it remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who collected the Homelands set during the mid-nineties.
