What it does

Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap that creature. Until end of turn, it gets +2/+0 and gains haste.

The horror lurched about like a puppet from a madman's nightmare, squeezing the life from its own kind.

Provenance

Where it came from

Traitorous Instinct was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi set, the third installment in the Zendikar block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to shift the game’s narrative toward the arrival of the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible entities capable of consuming entire worlds, which forced players to adapt to a high-mana, large-scale play environment.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the chaotic moment of betrayal. Mechanically, the card is a sorcery that temporarily grants control of an opponent's creature while providing a power boost and haste, a classic red-aligned effect designed to create high-impact, momentum-shifting plays during combat.
