Provenance

Where it came from

Traumatize was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 1999 Portal Three Kingdoms set before being reprinted as a rare in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. As a sorcery that targets a player to put the top half of their library into their graveyard, it has long functioned as a cornerstone for blue-aligned milling strategies designed to deplete an opponent's resources rapidly.

The Ninth Edition illustration was crafted by fantasy artist Greg Staples. Moving away from the original minimalist aesthetic, Staples employed a darker, more visceral style that emphasizes the psychological and structural dissolution implied by the card's name. The artwork was well-received for its atmospheric intensity, helping define the visual language of the core set's shift toward more sophisticated digital painting techniques during that period.
