Savannah Lions originally debuted in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly establishing itself as a hallmark of efficient, aggressive creature design. As a one-mana creature with two power and one toughness, it set the gold standard for White's early-game offensive capabilities, often referred to by players as the 'White Weenie' archetype staple. Its inclusion in the 2005 Ninth Edition core set marked a transition period for the game, as Wizards of the Coast moved toward a modernized border frame and updated art direction for iconic cards that had defined the game's first decade.

The Ninth Edition printing features art by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators in Magic's early history. Rush aimed to capture the predatory grace of the creature while adhering to the game's evolving visual identity during the mid-2000s. The version designated as 41★ is a foil 'DCI Judge Gift' promo variant, which is prized by collectors for its distinct aesthetic and its status as a sought-after collectible released through the game's organized play distribution channels, rather than through standard retail booster packs.
