Where it came from
Traverse the Ulvenwald was originally released in the Shadows over Innistrad set in 2016, a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. This card serves as a thematic continuation of the set's focus on graveyard interactions and the delirium mechanic, reflecting the player's journey through the treacherous, transformed wilds of the region. As a promotional version, this card was distributed through Magic: The Gathering organized play events, serving as a prestige variant for tournament participants.
The artwork, illustrated by Christine Choi, captures the eerie, mist-covered landscape of the Ulvenwald with a distinct painterly style. Choi utilized the cold color palette characteristic of the set to evoke a sense of isolation and creeping dread. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various formats, particularly due to its efficiency as a tutor, and is well-regarded by collectors for the atmospheric quality of its expanded, borderless promotional frame.
