Where it came from
The Treefolk token was released in 2007 as part of the Lorwyn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to represent the specific creature types generated by spells or abilities within the set, providing players with a tactile way to track game state. As Lorwyn focused heavily on tribal themes, the inclusion of dedicated, illustrated tokens was intended to immerse players in the folklore-inspired setting of the plane.
The art was created by D. Alexander Gregory, who leaned into the rustic, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Lorwyn block. The design emphasizes the organic, wood-bound nature of the Treefolk, using a warm color palette and textures that evoke deep forests. The set was generally well-received by the player base for its cohesive art direction, which helped define the visual identity of one of the game's most popular fantasy themes.
