Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token, designated as collector number 1 in the Lorwyn Eclipsed Tokens series, was introduced in 2007 by Wizards of the Coast to support the mechanics of the Lorwyn expansion. In the lore of the set, Shapeshifters were central to the identity of the changeling creature type, which possessed every creature type simultaneously. This token was designed to provide a physical representation for the effects generated by various cards within the block that created creature tokens with flexible, fluid identities.
The artistic direction for the Lorwyn block leaned heavily into folklore and pastoral surrealism, and this token reflects that aesthetic through its whimsical and abstract character design. Illustrators for the set were tasked with capturing the essence of a creature that exists in a constant state of flux. While many tokens in the game are treated as disposable gameplay aids, the Lorwyn Eclipsed series is often noted by players for its cohesive art style and its integration into the rich, high-fantasy narrative established during this era of the game.
