Where it came from
Tributary Instructor was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set, a supplemental expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to support the 'Veloci-RAMP-tor' preconstructed deck, focusing on dinosaur-themed mechanics that reward players for deploying large creatures onto the battlefield, reflecting the prehistoric and subterranean themes of the Ixalan plane.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who is noted for his lush, character-focused style within the game. Voss utilized a vibrant color palette to depict the instructor in a way that emphasizes the setting's scholarly yet rugged explorer aesthetic. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for creature-heavy decks, praised for its ability to generate card advantage in aggressive archetypes.
