Provenance

Where it came from

Triskelion was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 1994 Antiquities expansion. It was designed during a formative era of the game when artifact creatures were being heavily explored as a way to provide colorless utility to any deck archetype. Its mechanical identity centered on the concept of modular damage, allowing players to spend charge counters to ping targets on the battlefield, which made it a formidable strategic piece in both casual and competitive formats throughout the mid-1990s.

The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing was provided by Dan Frazier, a prolific early contributor to the game's aesthetic. Frazier’s design for the Triskelion leaned into the mechanical, abstract nature of the creature, depicting a construct of floating components that emphasized its ability to disassemble itself for combat. The card remains a classic example of early Magic design philosophy, balancing high mana costs with a flexible, high-impact ability that frequently defined the pace of play for many years.
